Kudu shot placement

Kudu shot placement is the heart-lung zone low behind the shoulder, on the line of the front leg a third of the way up the body. Kudu bulls are tall and deep-chested, and shots are often taken through gaps in thick bushveld.

Broadside

Follow the back edge of the near front leg up a third of the body and hold there. The long legs make the chest look higher than it is; the heart sits just above the elbow. The white stripes on the flank are not aim points.

Quartering and other angles

Quartering away, aim for the far front leg. Quartering to, enter at the point of the near shoulder with a bullet that holds together; a mature bull can weigh over 250 kg.

Do not

Do not aim by the white chevron between the eyes or the body stripes, and do not shoot through bush you have not checked. A twig in the bullet's path can deflect it.

Where they live and the typical miss

Greater kudu are found across Southern and East Africa, in bushveld, thornveld and broken hill country. The typical miss is high, because the long legs make the chest look higher, or a bullet deflected by brush.

Through the bush

Kudu are often shot in thick bushveld through gaps in cover. Make sure the bullet path is clear before you squeeze.

Off the sticks

Most kudu are shot off shooting sticks, often quickly as the bull pauses. Practise standing shots off sticks before the safari.
