Safari shot placement: African plains game and dangerous game

On African game the heart-lung zone sits lower and further forward than most first-time safari hunters expect, on the line of the front leg. Aim a third of the way up the body, not in the middle.

Plains game

Kudu, eland, gemsbok, wildebeest and zebra all share the same rule: follow the front leg up one third. Stripes, manes and markings mislead the eye.

Dangerous game

Buffalo, lion, leopard, elephant, hippo, rhino and crocodile each have their own rules. Read the dangerous game guide before you go.

Shooting sticks

Most safari shots are taken off sticks. Practise standing and shooting off sticks at home.
