Mouflon shot placement

Mouflon shot placement is the heart-lung zone low behind the front leg of a small, compact wild sheep. The chest is small and the animal is often shot in rocky hill country, so aim tight on the leg line and allow for the angle.

Broadside

Hold on the back line of the near front leg, a third of the way up the body. A mouflon ram's chest is roughly a hand span across. The light saddle patch on the flank can distract the eye; use the leg.

Quartering and other angles

Quartering away, aim for the far front leg. Shooting downhill, hold slightly higher on the near side so the exit comes low on the far side. Mouflon herds are skittish, so wait for your ram to stand clear.

Do not

Do not shoot through a herd of sheep, and do not guess the range on steep, broken hillsides.

Where they live and the typical miss

Found in Corsica, Sardinia and Cyprus, and introduced across much of mainland Europe. The typical miss is high over a small target on steep ground.

Woodland mouflon

In Central Europe mouflon often live in forest. Shots come at short range, in cover, and require a clear bullet path.
