Bushbuck shot placement

Bushbuck shot placement is a tight heart-lung shot behind the shoulder of a small, dense-bodied antelope that is usually glimpsed in thick riverine cover. Rams are aggressive when wounded, so a well-placed first shot is essential.

Broadside

Hold on the back line of the front leg, about a third of the way up the body. The chest is short and deep. Bushbuck often stand with the near leg back, which covers the heart with the shoulder, so for bow shots wait for the leg to move forward.

Quartering and other angles

Quartering away, aim for the far front leg. Quartering to, aim at the point of the near shoulder. Shots in riverine bush are often short and brief, so be ready on the sticks before the ram steps out.

Do not

Do not shoot through brush in dense riverine cover, and do not walk up on a downed ram carelessly. Wounded bushbuck rams have injured hunters with their horns.

Where they live and the typical miss

Found across Sub-Saharan Africa in riverine forest, thickets and the edges of dense bush. The typical miss comes from a bullet deflected by twigs, or a hurried shot at a ram that is moving off.

Dawn and dusk

Bushbuck feed at the edges of cover at first and last light. Still-hunt slowly along riverbeds and let the ram give you a clear window.
