Reedbuck shot placement

Reedbuck shot placement is the heart-lung zone low behind the front leg of a medium-sized antelope usually flushed from long grass or reedbeds. Shots are often quick and at close range, so the leg line has to be the reference.

Broadside

Hold on the back line of the near front leg, about a third of the way up the body. The chest is compact and the vitals sit low.

Quartering and other angles

Quartering away, aim for the far front leg. Reedbuck often run a short distance after being flushed and then stop to look back, giving a quartering-away shot.

Do not

Do not shoot a reedbuck bounding through long grass. Wait for it to stop.

Where they live and the typical miss

Common, mountain and Bohor reedbuck range across Southern, Central and East Africa, in grassland, reedbeds and vleis. The typical miss is a hurried shot at a running animal.

Grass and wet ground

Reedbuck live near water in long grass. Watch for the animal's head and horns above the grass, and be ready when it steps into the open.
