Giraffe shot placement

Giraffe shot placement is the heart, which sits low and forward in a deep, narrow chest, directly behind and above the front leg. The long neck, sloping back and patterned coat all fool the eye, so aim by the leg and elbow alone.

Broadside

Follow the back line of the front leg up to just above the elbow, roughly one third of the way up the chest from the brisket. A giraffe's heart is large and sits low, surprisingly close to the front leg. The lungs extend high and back from it.

Quartering and other angles

Quartering away, aim for the far front leg. Quartering to, enter at the point of the near shoulder. At normal ranges the upward angle to a giraffe's chest is slight, so hold as you would on a broadside.

Do not

Do not aim at the neck or head. The neck is long, thin and moves constantly, and misses there are common.

Where they live and the typical miss

Found across Southern and East Africa in savanna and open woodland. The typical miss is high, into the tall shoulder and back, caused by the animal's height and the coat pattern.

Bullets and bone

A bull giraffe's bones and hide are heavy. Use a bullet that penetrates deeply, and expect the shot to be taken from sticks at medium range.
