Zebra shot placement

Zebra shot placement is the heart-lung zone low behind the front leg of a thickset, horse-shaped body. The stripes break up the outline and hide the leg line, so aim by the elbow, not by the pattern.

Broadside

Follow the back edge of the near front leg up about a third of the chest height. The heart sits low, just above the elbow. A zebra's chest is deep and the shoulders are heavy; the stripes over the shoulder make it hard to see where the leg ends.

Quartering and other angles

Quartering away, aim for the far front leg. Quartering to, enter at the point of the near shoulder. Zebra herds are nervous and move constantly; wait for your stallion to stand clear.

Do not

Do not aim by the stripes. Find the leg first, then the elbow, then hold above it.

Where they live and the typical miss

Plains (Burchell's) zebra range across Southern and East Africa, and Hartmann's mountain zebra are found in Namibia. The typical miss is high over the back, caused by the stripes.

Tough animal

Zebra are tough and have heavy bones. Use a bullet that holds together and penetrates well.
