Hyena shot placement

Spotted hyena shot placement is the heart-lung zone low behind the front leg, in a chest set well forward of the sloping back. The high shoulders and low rump fool the eye, so the correct aim point is lower and further forward than most hunters expect.

Broadside

Hold on the back line of the near front leg, about a third of the way up from the bottom of the chest. The shoulder is the tallest part of the body, so the middle of what you see is too high.

Quartering and other angles

Quartering away, aim for the far front leg. Hyenas at bait are often facing the hunter's blind; a frontal shot into the centre of the chest just below the throat is possible from a solid rest.

Do not

Do not shoot at a hyena that is only partly visible in the dark, and do not follow a wounded hyena into cover without a torch and a backup.

Where they live and the typical miss

Found across Sub-Saharan Africa, often at night near bait. The typical miss is high over the back, caused by the sloping body and poor light.

Night hunting

Hyenas are mostly shot at night from a blind over bait, where regulations allow it. Make sure you have a steady rest, a clear view and a light that lets you see the leg line.
