Africa · Shot placement

Impala shot placement

Impala shot placement is the heart-lung zone just behind the front leg, low in the chest. They are small, alert and often shot at close range, so a precise hold on the leg line matters.

Broadside

Hold tight on the back line of the near front leg, a third of the way up the body. The chest is small and the heart sits just above the elbow.

Quartering and other angles

Quartering away, aim for the far front leg. Quartering to, enter at the point of the near shoulder.

Do not

Do not shoot into a herd. Impala rams stand among ewes, and a bullet can pass through into another animal.

Where they live and the typical miss

Found across Southern and East Africa in bushveld and open woodland, usually near water. The typical miss is back, into the paunch, or a hurried shot at a ram that was already moving.

Alert and fast

Impala rarely stand still for long. Be set up on the sticks before the ram steps clear.

Small chest

The heart-lung zone on impala is small. Hold tight on the front leg line, low in the chest.
