Red Hartebeest shot placement

Red hartebeest shot placement is the heart-lung zone low behind the front leg of an antelope with a sharply sloping back and high withers. The tall shoulders make the chest look deeper and higher than it is, so aim low on the leg line.

Broadside

Follow the back edge of the near front leg up about a third of the chest height. The body tapers steeply toward the hindquarters, so the middle of what you see is too high and too far back.

Quartering and other angles

Quartering away, aim for the far front leg. Hartebeest often stop and look back after running a short distance, giving a quartering-away shot.

Do not

Do not take long running shots at hartebeest. They are fast and hard to track in open country.

Where they live and the typical miss

Found in the Kalahari, Namibia and South Africa's northern grasslands. The typical miss is high over the back, caused by the sloping body.

Sentinels

Hartebeest often post a lookout on a termite mound. Plan your stalk to stay out of its line of sight.
