Broadside
Follow the back edge of the near front leg up about a third of the chest height. The heart sits just above the elbow. The long coat hides the leg line, so look for the elbow before you aim.
Quartering and other angles
Quartering away, aim for the far front leg. Quartering to, enter at the point of the near shoulder. Waterbuck often stand near water; wait for the bull to step into the open.
Do not
Do not shoot a waterbuck standing in water where recovery would be difficult, and do not approach a wounded bull carelessly. Its horns are dangerous.
Where they live and the typical miss
Common and Defassa waterbuck range across Southern, Central and East Africa, near rivers, lakes and wetlands. The typical miss is high, caused by aiming at the middle of the shaggy body.
Tough and heavy
Waterbuck are large and tough. Use a bullet that holds together and penetrates well.
